I'm stuck. It's taken me a long time to confess what I'm about to confess. Partly because I've spent a lot of time stereotyping people who do what I will confess I do too. And partly because I was deeply impacted by a comment one of my brothers made when I was about 12.
Confession; I like getting my nails done, and if it were my perfect world, I'd get them done once a week.
Why I don't; Because it's expensive, and I don't want to be seen as somebody who gets their nails done.
I know it's more vain to not want to be "one of those girls" than to actually be one of those girls, and believe me I'm trying to overcome all of this! But in the meantime, I'm stuck.
You see, after holding hands with a girl, one of my brothers commented on how her nails were short, and not painted; perfect. So from then on, I wanted to be comfortable enough with myself to have short, unpainted nails. But no matter how long I try to keep them short and unpainted, a lifeless Saturday night will creep in and I will inevitably find myself trying a color I haven't used in a year or so, or even better, I'll find myself (after having let my nails grow for a few weeks) painting my nails to actually appear as though I got them done.
Downsides;
Playing the organ with long nails is hard
A paint job, no matter how many coats, lasts only one day if you don't have a dishwasher
Anything can chip the paint, even opening my cell phone
The remorse after spending an hour doing the nails just to see them chip or peel, isn't worth it
Solution;
I'm not sure. If I keep them short, scratching an itch doesn't feel as good. If I grow them out and don't pain them, the slightest hint of dirt beneath the nail becomes the focal point of the entire hand regaurdless of how beautiful the ring my husband gave me looks on my hand, the dirt speaks louder. If I paint them while they're long the downsides are as mentioned before. And if I paint them while short they eventually ware off and my finger nails look like a 6 year old girl's. The only solution is to get my nails done every week. Though there are downsides to that as well;
an exceptionally large chunk of money is required to maintain such a habit
scratching an itch with fake nails isn't QUITE as good as the real nail
So, what to do? I suppose I'll continue my routine. Once in a blue moon, get my nails done, wear them as long as possible, even to the point where it could appear that I have two nails on each finger, the one put on by the nice people at the salon, and the one growing underneath it. Then, the nails will fall off, I'll cut them short to "heal" them. After the healing process is completed, I will then wait until a lifeless Saturday night and paint my new nails! Then they'll chip the next day, so I'll cut them short, take off the paint, and wait til a wedding, or a tax refund to get them done again!
For some of the smallest parts of my body....my nails sure do give me fits!
Anybody else?

Ash-ta-da, really I can't believe you spent the time writing that blog, I was laughing my head off. You kill me! When Collin's bath dam makes you guys rich and famous get those nails done once a week girl. Either that or go without groceries!
ASH! You might be the most halrious girl in the world. I think nails are completely and totally over rated! Let's get honest, can't play ball with nails! And typing??? almost impossible with nails - alot like the organ i would imagine! Anyway, laughed my head off reading your saga! You are the best!
Scratching an itch is never the same with fakers. And I learned that it disgusts a new groom to chew off your fake nails and spit them on the car floor, so no more nails for me after the wedding. Of course, I am blessed with the super mega stregnthed Linda nails- thanks mom, and it looks like my girls are too- so long nails without trying. Now the paint on the other hand.... better get a maid or personal assistant to open my phone.
I can't wait for Dad to read this!! You are a hoot!! I hope your life's problems are never more serious that what to do with your nails--and I'm serious about that. I love you!
Ash I'm not surprised you like your nails to be done, Your mom always has perfect nails! I guess mother like daughter, I hate to have fake ones.
So which brother's comment impacted you so much! So funny! I get what you are saying... I have never been able to grow long pretty nails Until I started taking prenatal pills- Weird I know, and don't ask, I don't take them anymore! Maybe u should try that, they were super strong! LOL... I still am laughing about your blog..
